The latest ransomware attack is nothing new but is getting world wide coverage because of the ability to distribute fast and wide around the world.  It preys on systems that have not been patched properly from Windows XP to Server 2008 R2.  At this time, it has not morphed to include recent operating systems such as Windows 10 and Server 2012 and up.  However, experts think other variants will soon hit.  The attack gets in through infected links and email attachments.  Microsoft has released information on patches required to ensure the infection isn’t able to run.  The SMB patch was released in March under the MS17-010 KB.    Latest intel coming in possibly is linking this attack to North Korea.  Read more about the attack from Wired Magazine here.
