As you may have read in another post, the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerability is pretty serious business if attacked. Hardware and software vendors have been scrambling to patch the problem since the original discovery. Unfortunately one of the side effects to patching systems is slowness and problems with compatibility. We have noticed an increase in calls from clients that have slower computers or laptops after bringing systems up to date. The performance hit hasn’t been noticed on newer systems as much. Generally this is because new systems are purchased with more RAM and faster SSDs (solid state drives). But don’t forget that even newly purchased systems will face this vulnerability. Intel is due to release an updated chip soon (slated for 2nd quarter of 2018) that should address the Spectre vulnerability. The Meltdown issue will be patched with software. To this date there have been little known attacks due to this problem but it’s better to be safe than sorry!
